Google Large Scale Article Campaigns

Google Large Scale Article Campaigns

Google have once again been providing some guidance, whether it is crystal clear or not remains to be seen, on large scale article SEO techniques.

I mention the element of crystal clear as the post here says in one sentence that Google does not discourage these type of articles. But in the next sentence say it does violate their webmaster guidelines if the intent is large-scale back linking.

However they don’t clarify a numerical value for large-scale. One man’s large-scale I am sure is different to the next mans.

Google kindly go on to outline some of the violation factors that could affect your website “when taken to an extreme” these are:

  • Stuffing keyword-rich links to your site in your articles
  • Having the articles published across many different sites; alternatively, having a large number of articles on a few large, different sites
  • Using or hiring article writers that aren’t knowledgeable about the topics they’re writing on
  • Using the same or similar content across these articles; alternatively, duplicating the full content of articles found on your own site (in which case use of rel=”canonical”, in addition to rel=”nofollow”, is advised)

However, again they fail to define their definition of extreme.

If you look at the definition for extreme, an English dictionary returns “very large in amount or degree”, this is still not helpful as it doesn’t define what very large is. Wikipedia ( defines large numbers as:

Large numbers in the everyday world

Examples of large numbers describing everyday real-world objects are:

  • The number of bits on a computer hard disk (as of 2010, typically about 1013, 500-1000 GB)
  • The estimated number of atoms in the observable Universe (1080)
  • The number of cells in the human body (more than 1014)
  • The number of neuronal connections in the human brain (estimated at 1014)
  • The lower bound on the game-tree complexity of chess a.k.a. the "Shannon number" (estimated at around 10120)
  • The Avogadro constant, the number of "elementary entities" (usually atoms or molecules) in one mole; the number of atoms in 12 grams of carbon-12; (approximately 6.022 × 1023)

As we can observe, the trend is to have 10 to the power of style numbers. So do we assume from Google that the interpretation of extreme (and large-scale) is in the magnitude of 10,000,000,000,000 (1013)?

Whilst all marketers will agree, performing well on Google will make a difference to your campaigns, what we really need is for Google to be clearer in their guidelines.

So if you are reading this post and know for certain – is it 5 back-links, 50, 500 or 5,000 (or whatever number it may be) that are built in a large-scale way, that will cause Google to look unkindly on a website and penalise it, then I would be delighted to hear from you.

And if you are reading this Google, please don’t penalise this post for referencing two pieces of duplicate content, as I am only educating or bringing awareness to my cause.
